Dear supporters and friends,
Greetings! I've been thinking on Romans 12:12 recently, which says, "Be joyful in hope, be patient in affliction, be faithful in prayer." I hope this verse encourages you as it does me. As you'll read, there is so much going on in Haiti right now.
Dear supporters and friends,Â
Greetings! I've been thinking on Romans 12:12 recently, which says, "Be joyful in hope, be patient in affliction, be faithful in prayer." I hope this verse encourages you as it does me. As you'll read, there is so much going on in Haiti right now. On the surface there is not much to be hopeful about. It feels like our patience through these difficult times has worn thin. But as the verse concludes, "Be faithful in prayer," which is our direct line to God through difficulties. We hope and pray FAIRE Garden is regularly in your prayers!
What's Been Going On
In Haiti recently, there is a glimpse of hope that the arrival of the international police force as well as Kenyan soldiers will provide much needed relief from ongoing gang violence in Port-au-Prince. Along with hope, there is also a great deal of skepticism among the people. The Prime Minister (nominated with input from international partners) has made promises that with the arrival of these outside forces, it will be safe enough to plan an election to determine who the people want as President. However, nothing seems to have happened thus far, and there is doubt that the outside forces will confront the gangs unless first provoked. While various gangs still control the majority of Port-au-Prince, the international airport has reopened.
What FAIRE Garden is Doing
We have continued to suspend all operations in Duval Roche, with the exception of providing water as it is too dangerous still. However, in the northeast we continue to expand our ministry.Â
We are currently providing one consistent meal every day and basic needs supplies to 200 kids in and around Terre-Rouge. We're also paying for school supplies and tuition for these kids to attend the nearest school, which is an eight mile walk to the east. There are still thousands more at-risk children in the area who we are seeking to help. In addition to those 200 children, we have begun an informal mentoring process for 30 young adults who have never been to school. Our dream is to provide them with hands-on skills which they can grow into a trade to support themselves, their families, and to serve their community. We decided to do this because we saw that these teenagers and young adults needed an alternative to the terrible options left to them because of desperation. Our long term goal is to build a formal trade school to reach this vulnerable population in and around Terrier-Rouge.Â
In order to feed those kids, we were buying food from the US to ship to Haiti via MFI (Missionary Flights International). It has become nearly impossible to continue this, primarily due to custom fees that are totally unregulated. To make best use of our resources, we have shifted our focus to expanding our agricultural ministry through local farming. We are now raising fish, chicken and goats, and growing rice, beans, corn, and anything else we can. We're thinking long-term, and our goal is to be as self-sustaining as we can to continue serving this community.
How to Support God's Work in Haiti Through FAIRE Garden
As mentioned in the last newsletter, we were in search of a truck to replace our current one that is dying. We have located a truck, praise God, and a very generous donor provided nearly half of the amount needed for the truck! Our next step to get the truck is to raise the remaining amount of money. Would you prayerfully consider helping us fund that truck?
You can donate at www.fairegarden.org
Please Join with us in Prayer
Pray for peace and political stability in Haiti and for a fair and safe election to be organized.Â
Pray for us to get the funds needed to purchase the truck, and then to also get two motorcycles to facilitate what we're doing.
Pray for perseverance for our staff and team, that they may continue to do what is good without losing their zeal. Pray that we all would continue to trust God.
